The Problem with AI Coding Tools

Every AI coding assistant today has the same problem: you're locked in.

Claude Code is great, but it's Anthropic's product. You can't see under the hood. You can't swap the model. You can't fork it when they add a paywall. And you definitely can't run it without an internet connection to their servers.

That's the gap LocalCode fills.

The Vision

"Claude Code, but open source"

LocalCode is an AI coding assistant that runs in your terminal — every line of code is visible, every feature is accessible, and your billing is to no one.

LocalCode → Your model (Ollama, OpenRouter, anything)
Claude Code → Anthropic's model only

What LocalCode Actually Does

Core Features

  1. Terminal Interface — Interactive REPL for code editing
  2. File Operations — Read, write, search across your codebase
  3. Shell Execution — Run commands with approval
  4. Git Integration — Commit, push, branch operations
  5. Web Fetch — Pull documentation and code from URLs

Model Flexibility

This is the real differentiator:

  • OpenRouter — Swap between GPT-4o, Gemini, Mistral, Claude
  • Ollama — Run models locally (Llama, Codestral, etc.)
  • OpenAI compatible — Any OAI-compatible endpoint
  • No vendor lock-in — Change models in one config file

What's Free

  • Unlimited usage (your API tokens, your cost)
  • All features unlocked
  • Full source access
  • No subscription required
  • Self-hostable

Current Status

What's Next

  • Agent mode — Multi-step task execution (run tests → fix → run again)
  • Computer use — Local screen/state access
  • More integrations — Database queries, Docker, cloud deployments
  • Extension marketplace — Community plugins

Why This Matters

AI coding tools are becoming infrastructure. The last thing we need is another proprietary tool locking us into someone else's pricing model.

LocalCode is the open alternative. It runs where you run, with what you want, for as long as you want.

LocalCode is open source. MIT license. Built by TheAlxLabs.
